" THE CENTER STAGE PLAYERS, a local theater group now in its 19th season, will present its 60th production, Bus Stop, by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright William Inge, at the Shawnee Playhouse, Shawnee-on-Delaware, from Friday, May 9th through Sunday, May 11th. The play opened on Broadway in 1955 to a very successful year-long run. In 1956, Marilyn Monroe starred in the film version, which was named one of the 10 best of the year by the National Board of Review. The action of Bus Stop takes place inside a street corner diner in a small town about 30 miles west of Kansas City. During a howling snowstorm, a small busload of weary travelers finds themselves stranded until morning. Cherie, a nightclub ‘chanteuse,’ has been kidnapped by a young cowboy who is ready to sling her over his shoulder and carry her, kicking and screaming, down the aisle. Grace, the diner owner and a “grass widow,” is looking forward to getting to know bus driver Carl a little better during the layover. And teenage waitress Elma is fascinated by Dr. Lyman, a thrice-married professor with a love of rye whiskey, romantic poetry, and innocent young ladies. Shakespeare said “the course of true love never did run smooth,” and playwright Inge provides a sweet, funny and bumpy ride for his motley cast of characters. If you want to learn more about Center Stage’s 2008 season, visit their website at www.centerstageplayers.org.
