BUSHKILL FALLS off Route 209 in Bushkill, since 1904, is a beautiful natural park of 300 acres surrounding 8 gorgeous waterfalls. Paths, stairs, and bridges are sturdy and well-maintained; go for a leisurely stroll, or challenge the 2-mile Red Trail! Exhibits and activities include a Leni Lenape Native American longhouse, wildlife exhibits, miniature golf, gift and souvenir shops, food and candy, an open-air pavilion, playground, paddleboats, fishing, special events, and a free picnic/grill area. CLAWS 'N' PAWS WILD ANIMAL PARK on Route 590 east of Hamlin, near Lake Wallenpaupack, features strange and wonderful creatures exhibited in natural settings and enclosures along tree-lined paths. Observe many species of live exotic animals from all over the world, including monkeys, alligators, bears, lions, leopards, birds, snakes, and a rare white tiger. Critters like kinkajou, coati, binturong, and muntjac will amaze you; animal shows are performed daily. ECKLEY MINER'S VILLAGE on Route 940 east of Hazleton was once a thriving coal mining patch town with a population of over a thousand! Founded in 1854, it was an anthracite-mining community owned by a series of coal companies. Eckley was abandoned with the advent of strip mining; the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission has restored this ghost town to its former condition. Kitchens, bedrooms, personal items, clothing, laundry rooms, social clubs, churches, doctor’s office, and the company store all appear now as they were then. QUIET VALLEY LIVING HISTORICAL FARM off Business Route 209 south of Stroudsburg offers public tours of the authentic, working, 19th-century farmstead. STEAMTOWN NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE at 150 South Washington Avenue in nearby Scranton is the only National Park site devoted to steam railroading. Enjoy locomotive and railroad equipment displays, as well as an impressive, fascinating museum. Regular and special train excursions are offered throughout the year, departing from the boarding platform and rolling past historic buildings, through tunnels, along mountain streams, and amidst beautiful woodlands. TOBYHANNA TRAIN STATION & MUSEUM on Route 423 in Tobyhanna is hosted by the Pocono Rail Historical Society, and open to the public seasonally and for special events. All ages will love to tour the restored facility with the Station Master (a delightful and knowledgeable fellow!), and learn how it really used to be when the station was a bustling business. Enjoy railroading videos, fascinating running model train layouts, memorabilia, railroad art exhibits, and railroad and train-related souvenirs.
